Thimios Atzakas / UdopiaUdopia is a land shaken by sound. A land where once upon a time a piece of ancient wood was bent into an instrument that broke silence, dripping drops of harmony. Udopia is the homeland of the ud, the place where it sounds at its most utopian, coarse and demonic. Udopia is an oral bio-musical chronicle spanning twelve years. It consists of seven sonar narratives by Thymios Atzakas, arranged for an oud soloist and an ensemble of five performers of other instruments.
Udopia uses it’s roots in the pagan music traditions of the balkan area as a starting point for explorations over a wide area, from the ancient modal scales to more contemporary strands of modal improvisation and composition. All the musicians are at home in a variety of different styles, bringing with them individual talents and ideas developed through studies and projects all over the world that have a direct bearing on the ensemble. The udopia pieces are part composition, part improvisation, creating a freamwork that showcases the unique qualities of the ud in a continuous interaction with all six international performers.
